In what order should I consume Ghruta and Chyawanprash in the morning? I also like to drink lemon water...
Getting our morning routine right is one of the most important things we can do for ourselves. It is, after all, how we begin our day, creating the imprint for the hours that follow. If we begin it well - in harmony with our needs and constitution - then we are giving ourselves the best chance of feeling balanced and energised for the rest of the day. And what more could we ask for? Great news that you have invested in both Chyawanprash and Ghruta: you are on course for setting yourself up very well each day ahead. Chyawanprash is a multi-versed tonic of wonder, the nectar of longevity as it’s termed in Ayurveda. Ghruta is an incredible nervous system soother and nourisher of the tissues, as well as being the best vata rebalancer. The magic of both Chyawanprash and Ghruta is that they suit pretty much everyone…with a couple of caveats.*

Feeling Into Your Needs

Without doing a consultation** with you I couldn’t tell you what your specific needs are, but I can tell you how to feel into what your needs are, and have the confidence to know that some day’s needs will be different to other days’. It’s all about your needs :) So I would recommend: when you wake up in the morning - once you are up and have stretched your arms above your head and drunk a little warm water - now feel:
  1. Did you have a good night’s sleep, do you feel rested with a back drop of steady energy?
  2. Do you feel wired and shaky, like your vata is out of balance?
  3. Do you feel a little lethargic and dull, like you just want to sleep more (ie. your kapha is peaking in the wrong direction and you may have some toxicity roaming the channels?)
If you answer 1: start with a teaspoon of Chyawanprash, followed by some more warm water. Then I would do your meditation, or asana practice if this is what you get up to in the morning, and then before breakfast, have a teaspoon of Ghruta, followed by a little more warm water (when I say a little, I am talking 1/2 of a mug, around 150-200ml). If you answer 2: Start with a teaspoon of Ghruta, to nourish the vata, followed by warm water, and then you can get on to the Chyawanprash chased by a little warm water. Before your morning practice and breakfast If you answer 3: Then don’t eat the Ghruta that morning, just stick to the Chyawanprash, and get back to the Ghruta if you are feeling angsty or restless before you go to bed.

A Note on Lemon Water in the Morning

It is a great thing to have occasionally, but it doesn’t need to be every morning, and I would be aware of your teeth when having it. I recommend you don’t brush your teeth for at least 30 minutes on either side of having it, so it doesn’t wear away the enamel. Warm water is a must each mooring in my opinion, and then interchange it with squeezes of lemon on some days. *if you have a kapha imbalance, are feeling heavy of lethargic, or feel you might have some toxicity or ama in your system, then avoid the ghruta til you have cleared this up. **I recommend you see a practitioner to work out what your specific needs and whether you require a cleanse, feel free to get in touch with me here.
