How Chyawanprash Boosts Immunity
Chyawanprash has long been revered for its ability to boost ojas (vitality) and increase overall immunity. Read on to learn how the star ingredients in this herbal jam deeply nourish and revitalize the body and mind and how to use Chyawanprash for immunity.
Amalaki or Amla Berry
The principal ingredient is Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), lovingly known as the Herb of Eternal Life. Amalaki is a sour fruit and a very rich source of vitamin C, making it a potent antioxidant. Vitamin C boosts immune function and prevents free radical damage to cells. It gently detoxifies the digestive tract promoting regularity and strong agni. In Ayurveda, we know that strong digestion is the key to good health. Amalaki is also an excellent remedy for excess Pitta or inflammation in the body.
Pippali
Pippali (Piper longum) is another key ingredient in chyawanprash. A cousin to black pepper, this pungent spice supports our Pranavaha Srotas or air channels. A top herb for the lungs, Pippali acts as a broncho-dilator to open up airways. Its antitussive and expectorant properties help to clear congestion from the lungs, throat and larynx. Just like black pepper, Pippali is a fruit, high in immune boosting antioxidants and vitamin C. It aids digestion and absorption, increasing the potency of the other herbs.
Ashwagandha
Perhaps the buzziest Ayurvedic herb for its ability to soothe the nervous system and restore the adrenals, Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is another key ingredient. A top rejuvenative, Ashwagandha restores function and builds strength in all bodily tissues. Known for its ability to clear kapha lung conditions, it supports healthy breathing and the flow of Prana. Ashwagandha is an adaptogen, supporting the immune system by helping the body adapt to stress. It works to calm vata dosha and support sound sleep. Amalaki, Pippali and Ashwagandha are blended with other herbs like Shatavari, Bacopa, Tulsi and Licorice root in a base of ghee and honey. These herbs work together to rejuvenate the body and restore ojas. In Ayurveda, ojas is the subtle essence of kapha dosha and represents our immunity and vitality. Overwork, stress and poor lifestyle can deplete ojas, affecting our immunity. These rasayana herbs work to rebuild the strength and vitality of body and mind. A person with good ojas rarely becomes sick. Used for millennia, Chyawanprash is an important rejuvenative formula. It supports healthy digestion and elimination which are foundational to good health. Its powerful herbs are high in vitamin C and antioxidants, boosting the immune system and offering targeted support to the lungs. A remedy for today’s world, it balances the nervous system and helps the body adapt to stress. Enjoy 1 teaspoon daily to use Chyawanprash for immunity and promote good health.
