Finding My Way Back To Balance

PIOR Living / Yoga Life & Reflections / Finding My Way Back To Balance

July 18, 2020 by Amanda

We are living in very uncertain times where it is difficult to plan for the weekend let alone next month. It seems many of us are moving from feeling some kind of comfort in the chaos to feeling stuck and anxious because we no longer know how long this will last. Because of the uncertainty, it’s easy to fall into old habits that don’t serve us.

At the beginning of the pandemic, I found myself sleeping more than I usually do and skipping exercise and meditation which are part of my non-negotiable activities of the day. I went back to my old habits and started to notice the difference in my body and mind: I felt more anxious and fearful, and I was gaining weight and felt tired throughout the day. I knew these symptoms weren’t normal; the body needs consistency and attention to function well.

It took time and determination to come back to my healthy habits — yet, feeling good is always worth the try.

There are lots of tips and advice you can find on the internet about feeling grounded, staying healthy, reducing anxiety, and learning to make this reality our new normal. I’m going to give a few Ayurvedic and personal strategies I’ve been using to remain stable and sane throughout all of this.

My Tips for Coming Back to Balance

Remember what you love about your healthy routine.

For me, it is the feeling of calmness and serenity I get when I’m done with my morning routine. It follows me throughout the rest of the day.

Journal.

Journaling has been a new habit I adopted not long ago and it has been life-changing. I feel I have a safe place to express myself the way I want and truly speak my mind without judgment.

Drink soothing teas.

I’ve been using a combination of chamomile and rose tea right when I feel anxiety or anger because they’re both cooling herbs that settle the mind and the digestive system.

I’ve also been drinking Coriander, Cumin, and Fennel in one cup of warm water. This simple formula helps me with any digestive symptoms such as gas, bloating, heaviness, and a general feeling of fatigue as it kindly encourages the digestive system to keep working. I love drinking it before my meals; especially lunch.

Another of my favorite teas is water infused with grounded cardamom and cloves. I use less than 1/8tsp to a 24oz of water and I drink it throughout the day. This is a cooling drink that improves digestion, quality of the skin, and liver and teeth health as well as prevents gas.

Find time to do something relaxing and enjoyable.

Try reading a light book that brings you peace before bed. This will help to control those unwanted thoughts that keep us awake at night.

Most importantly, stay humble and be kind to yourself and others.

These are uncertain times and we need to stay together and well so we can help the ones who need it the most.

Namaste.

Namaste.
