What’s a good alternative to black tea?

PIOR Living / Yoga Life & Reflections / What’s a good alternative to black tea?

April 9, 2021 by Clare Michalik

Did you know that there are over 3,000 different types of teas in the world? And yet, black tea continues to be the most famous and popular tea in the world. It has a bold and robust taste that many people enjoy. However, if you’re looking to reduce your caffeine intake, or reduce your milk and sugar intake, which is commonly added to black tea, then you may want an alternative. So, what is a good alternative to black tea?

This article will touch on three types of tea options that would make a great alternative to black tea.

Top 3 Alternative to Black Tea

Chicory Coffee

You may see the word coffee, but it is not what you think. Chicory coffee comes from the chicory root, which is a distant cousin to the dandelion. Considered an herbal tea (and therefore, does not contain caffeine), chicory root tends to have a similar taste to coffee, yet it also contains additional hints of woodiness. Chicory Root has regained popularity as an excellent alternative to black tea and coffee. The big positive is that chicory root contains a water-soluble fiber called inulin. According to an article published in the National Library of Medicine, inulin found in chicory root can help with digestion, inflammation, and lowering blood sugar. If you like the robust taste of black tea and are looking for a similar flavor profile without the caffeine, chicory root coffee may be the perfect alternative for you!

Chyawanprash

If you’re looking for an extra healthy alternative to black tea, chyawanprash is a delicious ayurvedic superfood blend made from 35+ herbs and spices. The medical properties in chyawanprash are extensive, helping to nourish and enhance the immune, respiratory, circulatory, and digestive systems. Chyawanprash also boosts energy naturally using adaptogenic herbs and sharpens your focus and clarity due to its use of nootropic botanicals. The 35+ ingredients create a delicate, silky, rich flavor that is antioxidant-rich.

If you align with minimally processed and eco-friendly sources, PIOR Living is a top choice. Their products are natural and sustainably sourced from farms and villages throughout India. Each ingredient in their chyawanprash is harvested with the seasons, minimally processed, and used with intention.

Golden Milk

Golden milk has become a popular drink in recent years. It’s a great alternative to black tea if you prefer something a little more frothy. Although you can mix golden spices with water, you can prepare with milk or a milk alternative. Here is a standard recipe used:

  • 1 cup whole organic cow’s milk (or oat, almond, or coconut milk)
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper, ground
  • 1/4-1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • ¼ tsp ginger powder
  • a dash of cinnamon powder
  • a pinch of cardamom powder

This mix is a potent anti-inflammatory tonic and can also spark your agni for optimal digestion. You can add your sweetener of choice for a sweeter taste. Due to black tea’s bitterness, golden milk is an excellent alternative to keep your agni warm and robust.
