If I Cannot Have Dairy, Can I Have Ghee?

A lactose intolerance means you have problems digesting lactose. This shows up as digestive disturbance, including bloating, cramps, constipation or diarrhoea, excess gas and a painful abdomen. If you suffer from these symptoms of lactose intolerance, you can consume Pior’s ghee as the lactose has been removed in the process of making the product.

PIOR Living / Ask Selina / If I Cannot Have Dairy, Can I Have Ghee?

Do you have a dairy allergy or are you lactose intolerant?

You can find this out by seeing what your symptoms are saying.

Lactose Intolerance

A lactose intolerance means you have problems digesting lactose (the sugar which we find in milk). This shows up as digestive disturbance, including bloating, cramps, constipation or diarrhoea, excess gas and a painful abdomen. If you suffer from these symptoms of lactose intolerance, you can consume Pior’s ghee! The lactose has been removed in the process of making the product. Read more about that here.

If it is just cow’s milk that gives you this reaction, but you are ok with goat and ewe’s milk, then you may be intolerant of A1 milk, which I have written about more here. (Humans in general don’t do well with A1 cow’s milk). But this means you can happily consume Pior Living’s ghee / ghruta as it is made using A2 milk.

Dairy Allergy

If you have a dairy allergy, then it is a little different. Dairy allergy symptoms include: nausea and vomiting, hives and a rash, wheezing and breathing problems, and in severe cases anaphylactic shock. If this is the case when you consume any mammal’s milk (cow, goat, ewe, buffalo), then I would steer clear of all milk-based products.

Intolerances are often treatable through Ayurvedic diet and lifestyle management as it is likely an imbalance that is causing this, so do seek professional Ayurvedic help if this is the case.

I answered a similar question here, if you are interested in reading more about this topic.

Love,

Selina
