When “OM” is Not Enough: Understanding Stress

PIOR Living / Yoga Life & Reflections / When “OM” is Not Enough: Understanding Stress

July 6, 2020 by Amanda

The world has learned that stress is bad and undesirable. We’ve been programmed to believe that the goal is to not to feel stress at all. Look at social media for example: how many people are publishing the harsh, the frustration, the stress, and the bad moments that all of us as humans go through? Pretty much no one. Yet, this is understandable because we don’t want to talk about stress. Stress can affect many aspects of our lives and we could pretty much blame every imbalance and illness to it, but stress is not all bad.

The Benefits of Stress

Stress has actually kept us safe for centuries by keeping us away from poisonous foods and looking for shelter during rainy days. Stress is what activates our fight-or-flight response and because of it, we were able to run away from hungry tigers or fight to stay alive.

Thankfully, we no longer have to deal with those types of stressors in modern life. We have evolved so much that most of our primary necessities are covered. Of course, I’m aware of the exceptions in the world, but nonetheless, we are not living in the same conditions as we used to in the past. The hazards may be different yet, whether the danger is perceived or real, the chemical reactions in our brains remain the same. Our brains don’t see the difference between another person trying to steal our food and a bill that came and we are unable to pay.

The Problem with Stress Accumulation

Stress shuts down your digestion, increases heart rate, creates stress in the liver and other major organs, liberates adrenaline, and tenses the muscles. Before our modern problems, our bodies were able to release the stress by us running away or fighting whatever it was that we perceive dangerous. Nowadays, we can’t really run away from rent, we can’t fight our bosses when we receive a bad annual review nor avoid all situations that seem stressful. Because of it, the chemical reaction stays in the body for way longer than it should. The problem really starts when we accumulate all of that instead of finding healthy ways to release. This is called chronic stress and it is the number one killer in the world.

How to Cope With Stress

So, what do we do now? We cope with it, and I don’t mean that we sit in meditation and throw stress somewhere in our unconscious mind. I believe we have the right tools to release the physical reactions, but we still need to learn to deal with our internal chattering. We can’t simply ignore what our minds are saying. We need to hold space for ourselves by talking in the mirror, recording yourself reflecting on the situation, shaking it out (literally), screaming in a pillow, pouring your heart out in a piece of paper. If we don’t find peace with it, the next time something remotely similar to what you thought was stressful happens, your mind will bring back those feelings and memories, and your body will react even stronger.

I encourage you to have an internal conversation with yourself. Most of the time, your mind and stress just want you to listen and be reminded that everything is going to be okay. That’s the type of comfort you can’t find in mantras or hours of meditations. That’s the type of love and compassion you can give to yourself.

No muchos.
