What are the Best Supplements for Yoga?

PIOR Living / Yoga Life & Reflections / What are the Best Supplements for Yoga?

June 11, 2020 by Nigel Ford

If you practice yoga, you may be looking for ways to elevate your experience on the mat. Fortunately, there are a variety of supplements that benefit and enhance yoga and asana practice.

The Best Supplements for Yoga

Consider integrating these supplements into your daily life if you practice yoga:

Ginger and Turmeric

Ginger and turmeric are some of the most famous medicinal herbs, and for good reason. Ginger and turmeric are from the Zingiberaceae family and possess unique anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. If you’re struggling with an injury or think you have inflammation, you may want to consider incorporating these herbs into your diet. One of the best ways to get these supplements is simply to cook with them!

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is an adaptogen herb that has the unique ability to increase strength and endurance while also providing a calming energy. If you’re looking for help to sustain longer and more strenuous workouts, consider including this as a pre workout supplement for yoga.

Holy Basil

Are you working through any emotional difficulties? Holy basil is one of the best herbs to add to a pre workout supplement for yoga. Holy basil has the unique ability to help unblock stuck emotions. This, in addition to its relaxing and anxiety-fighting properties, make it a fantastic tool for helping yogis find true peace.

Chyawanprash

Chyawanprash is one of the premier yoga supplements for boosting overall health and vitality. Chyawanprash is an ancient Ayurvedic herbal remedy packed with powerful botanicals, including turmeric, ashwagandha and holy basil. This superfood supplement uniquely supplies Yogis with the nutrients needed to improve concentration, increase energy, and build strength.

Chyawanprash is also utilized by Yogis because it increases the body, mind and spirit connection for lightness of being. One teaspoon immediately before practice helps Yogis leverage the power of rasa, making it the ultimate pre-workout supplement yoga.

Microalgae

Many yogis enjoy the vegan lifestyle; however, there’s often thing vegans are missing in their diet: an omega-3 fatty acid known as DHA.

DHA is responsible for most of the benefits that are associated with omega-3 fatty acids. Unfortunately, our body has a hard time producing DHA from other omega-3 fatty acids. Since DHA is usually only found in high quality animal products, many vegans are deficient in it.

Fortunately, DHA can be found in various microalgae. Picking up a microalgae supplement is smart for anyone who wants to keep their joints, brain, heart, and muscles in good shape.

Probiotics

Probiotics are hip and happening – for a reason. Probiotics nourish the bacteria in your gut, which are responsible for carrying out a number of activities necessary for health and wellness, including breaking down all of the nutrients that you get from food. In other words, probiotics will make all the vitamins and minerals that you’re already eating much more effective.

If you’re looking for yoga supplements, it’s also important to consider your specific constitution or dosha type. You may want to consult with an Ayurveda practitioner to help you identify the best supplements for your unique needs.
